We just started a new reading/phonics program - ABeCeDarian - as part of the Homeschool Review Crew. Two weeks ago, I received our materials in the mail, and spent several days reading the theory and instruction sections of the teacher manual. We started work last Monday. By this Monday, he can read six words!
A year ago, he had a whole bunch of educational testing done, and the results were not hopeful. His language disabilities left him on the cusp of being considered "ineducable." It took him over a year to learn his alphabet (and he still struggles). We started this program, and I wasn't expecting success -- I figured we would just plod along and get there eventually. My hope was that by next spring we would have an "early reader."
But he is READING WORDS!!!!
Look for a full review in a couple weeks...but in the meantime, we are going to keep practicing!
Update: Jude is still going strong, and our ABeCeDarian review is complete! Click here to read it.

Fantastic!! I am rejoicing with you! I am not on this review, but we hit the jackpot with a reading program last fall from the Crew, so I know what a blessing it is to find something that makes it click. Congratulations to Jude!
ReplyDeleteYay! Yay! Hooray! I don't even know you and I'm excited for him! :) Teaching reading to my kids has always been my very favorite thing, and my son (PDD-NOS, apraxia, developmental dyspraxia, and a prenatally drug-affected brain) has had to deal with major speech and language delays. I was told he may never be able to learn how to read, but they were wrong. :) I love it when "they" are wrong! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteThat must be so exciting.
